Since 1936 when the first Giant Food store opened in Washington, DC, the Giant Landover division has been dedicated to quality, value and service. That focus continues to this day, both within stores and through its commitment to community growth and development. Based in Landover, MD, Giant currently operates 173 stores in Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and the District of Columbia. Giant Food is a member of the Ahold USA group, of which the parent company is Royal Ahold of the Netherlands. Ahold USA supports four regional Divisions - Stop&Shop/New England; Stop&Shop/New York Metro; Giant-Landover and Giant-Carlisle - that together operate more than 750 supermarkets with more than 100,000 associates in 13 states and the District of Columbia along with Peapod, our e-commerce grocery shopping/delivery service.

The company is a member of the U.S. Green Building Council and has been recognized by the EPA for superior energy management of its stores and is also a member of the EPA's Smart Way program. 

Giant serves approximately 2 million customers weekly. Giant employs approximately 22,000 full and part time associates and is one of the largest private employers in both Maryland and Washington DC. 

In 2010, Giant contributed $10 million in cash, goods and services to support charitable and community organizations in the markets it serves. Giant maintains a strong commitment to area food banks, raising thousands of dollars annually in funds and non-perishable products, and to education, sponsoring the popular high school television quiz show It's Academic. In addition, Giant customers helped to raise $1.5 million in 2010 for the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center and the Children's Cancer Foundation for medical research and programs.
